Dear Feastlings,
I’m often grateful that New Menu Day falls on Election Day- people are focused on watching the returns and seeing what they think they can expect for the next two or four or six years while we have an extra day to work the kinks out of new menu dishes, figure out how we’ll lay the ingredients out in the refrigerators, and scramble to pick up whatever ingredient didn’t arrive. As for me, I voted a week and a half ago, my vote’s been counted, and I’m sure that it’ll be days before it all shakes out- I just hope and pray that what follows is credible, what follows that is civil, and that we can all get on with our lives and perhaps listen to one another with the empathy and respect we’d like to receive.
I’m just putting my head down and trying to get New Menu Day done with one kitchen employee out on a well-deserved vacation, another out on an undeserved accident, and a third out whose day off request I somehow missed altogether on the calendar. It’s a fairly quiet day so far, but I know everyone now can watch the returns from their table, be it at home or out at a restaurant. Still, I’m hoping it’s riveting enough to let us get a leg up on the menu, which looks like this for November:

We’ve got the wine put together for this weekend as well, a collection of wines that your autumn table, Thanksgiving or otherwise, is begging for.
There’s a menu for Thanksgiving pickup as well, and with any luck, the election returns will all have been counted by then, and by some miracle, people everywhere will sit down at their Thanksgiving tables and talk to their loved ones like loved ones, though I have a feeling election returns in and of themselves may not accomplish that as quickly as we’d like. You have until November 21st to place your orders, whereupon we’ll do all the cooking for whichever aspect of Thanksgiving you don’t feel like bothering with, and send you home with a finished product and heating instructions for the big day. That menu is here:
My own suggestion: take in your election returns in small sips and manageable bites, like your Thanksgiving dinner, so that you don’t doze off hating yourself on the couch. And let us do the cooking and help you find the right sip. We’re here for you. And may your election returns be many and happy.
Happy autumn.
Doug
