Occasionally on a Sunday

Dear Feastlings,

Things are still precarious over here- every day is a tricky bit of acrobatics, with one person swinging in at the last second to catch the responsibilities of the person before who slips away. Someone leaves for the green grass on the other side of the occupational fence and another jumps in to save the Saturday night saute shift that’s been left vacant. That new person drops out and another swings in to catch everything before it clatters to the ground. One is momentarily felled by Covid and another appears out of the distant past to hold a platter underneath falling charcuterie.

Yesterday was a flurry of activity and stress, as the person who usually makes sure we’ve got dessert handy for the three hundred or so meal donations was out sick and we only realized an hour and a half before I had to leave with all of it that we needed to knock out three hundred sweets in what amounts to eighteen seconds apiece. We may as well have all been riding unicycles around the kitchen. Today promises to be a bit better, as we have samples poured for today’s wine tasting,

Cab ride

and the food is prepped for tomorrow’s (sold-out) tasting as well,

Youth is wasted on the young

but we’re still in the midst of putting together a stable and reliable enough crew to reopen on Sundays. Hence the remote tasting tomorrow, when I’ll join you from a lonelier than usual kitchen to shoot the breeze about old vine wines. Sundays will remain shuttered for at least two more weekends, and we’ll see where it goes from there. I’m feeling bullish, but only at this moment; I’m sure by this afternoon I’ll have felt differently at least two or three times.

Today, though, we’ll live in a bubble of relative normalcy, and we invite you to join us. While it’s not yet technically summer, it’s summertimey enough that you can now call and get a reservation on the same day, and we encourage you to do so. Come for the tasting and stick around for a bite, or, if you’ve got one eye on rising Covid numbers, come in, grab your samples and beat a hasty retreat to join us from the safety of a screen. Then come back next week for the curious confluence of events that’s held the May menu over for another week (the first Tuesday in June isn’t until the 7th, so you’ve got a week’s worth of chances to have that crabcake with the pad thai underneath it, or the salmon with pickled grapes, cashews and lemon zest, or a handful of other dishes. Well- I guess it’s not a whole week, though, as Sundays are still out of the picture for now, nor Mondays, and the rest of the week we still feel like we’re dancing with a cocktail tray of ouzo balanced on our heads. You know, like this:

See you soon, everyone.

Your pal,

Doug
