Hello, Feastlings.
A number of you attended our Basque influence in the Borderlands dinner a few months ago, during which you likely met Arielle DeSoucey of Civil Wines. She’s a fixture in the Tucson wine world, and I don’t think she’d mind if we noted that as a wine person, her soft spot lies in Austria. In fact, on a recent trip, she met a winemaker who has wines in Arizona distribution, which is how she met, and later introduced us to, Felix Stepski.
Felix started Marlow Provisions as an expat living in Phoenix, with his own fondness for the wines of Austria, Germany and northern Italy (where his own family makes wine.) Chris and I met with Felix a few weeks ago, and wine after wine that he showed us completely overdelivered for its price, whether it was a $20 bottle or a $90 bottle. We have the good fortune this week of having Felix make the trek down to the Old Pueblo, and I’ll tell you this: Chris, after Felix left, looked at me and said: “wines like these are the reason I got into the wine business to begin with.”
