September is the cruellest month.

Dear Feastlings,

September is usually our tightrope walk. Yes, the summer is technically over now, as of Monday, and yes, school’s begun again, but our experience at Feast has historically been that, contrary to T. S. Eliot’s assertion, September is the cruellest month. The snowbirds do begin returning, it’s true, but they don’t return in earnest until November, and some not until the holidays are behind us. June, July and August are rough for small businesses in Tucson who aren’t repairing HVAC or cars or whatever else breaks down when the thermometer hits 100 degrees- it’s true. But the discretionary spending that restaurants rely on is invariably stymied by the credit card bills that come at the tail end of that summer vacation people took in July, or by the school supplies that need to be laid out for August and September.

While we don’t exactly have to worry about feeding a little life with dried tubers during winter around here under forgetful snow, I’d take April over September any day.

And so we do our part to give people a reason to treat themselves a little bit, and keep the September bill collectors at bay for us and our crew. This Saturday, the 26th, there’ll be an end-of-the-month wine tasting, the fancy kind we do on the last Saturday of the month, with food pairings and generous pours.

Greater than the sum of its parts

And next week, we’ll retitle Speedway “America Boulevard” and offer some American classics alongside discounts on domestic wines- that will take place on the 29th and 30th.

Amber waves of grain

The upshot is, you’ll have an extra reason to dine out, and we’ll have an extra reason to get more butts in our seats. Everybody wins. Even wine wins.

And even though it’s still toasty warm, you can read The Waste Land here

and tip your hat to September, our own cruellest month.

See you soon.

Your pal,

Doug
