Feriae Augusti

Dear Feastlings,

If you’re a fan of ancient Roman history, you already know about Feriae Augusti, the festival of the emperor Augustus.  If you’re a fan of vacations, or Rimini, or things Italian, you might know about Ferragosto.  The story, in a nutshell, is this: in August, the month named for Augustus Caesar (and yes, July is named for Julius Caesar, the only other month not named for a god or a number,) on the 15th, Italians to this day celebrate the festival, mostly by clearing out of every city that isn’t on a beach, and stuffing themselves into every city that does have one, while they leave their inland burgs to the German tourists to wander in short shorts, scratching their heads and marveling that they don’t need their Italian dictionaries, as there are no Italians to be found.  We’re closed on Mondays, so we’re hoping to celebrate Ferragosto on Sunday the 14th, assuming we’re back open on Sundays by that point, and at the very least we’ll open up that day to feed you Italian delicacies and offer you Italian wines at a discount.

In preparation, we thought we’d start showing off some of the Italian wines on our list, and we do it with food pairings on the last Sunday of July, the 31st, at 3:30 pm.  At this point, we’re still shuttered on Sundays, so once again, this will be a tasting where we package up the food pairings and talk you through them on the all-too-familiar Zoom screen.  You can call us at (520) 326-9363  and we’ll set aside the tastes and the snacks for you, and for $35 plus tax and tip, you can pick it all up on Saturday the 30th, throw it in the fridge and then sidle up to the screen with your stove fired up and experience it all with your tasting buddies on the 31st.

THE TASTING BEGINS ON ZOOM AT 3:30 PM ON SunDAY, July 31.  THE ZOOM MEETING NUMBER FOR THE TASTING IS 865 0644 7275 and the passcode is 433852.
