Dear Feastlings,
I was driving yesterday, an activity I don’t particularly enjoy to begin with, and I noted a substantial amount of traffic. Substantial, anyway, for late May in Tucson. I’m historically not a fan of traffic, which is the reason I’m historically not a fan of driving, but in 24 years of owning a business that’s dependent on people being in town, I’ve learned to glean a few little scraps of hope from each tiresome wait at a stoplight.
All that said, I’ve been duped. Traffic may indeed be slow, but the reason appears to be because every street that I habitually use is under construction. And while I admire that whichever person schedules such things has got the preponderance of construction going on in the less frantic summer months, I’m fairly disappointed that they’ve also chosen to work on multiple parallel arteries simultaneously, so that no matter where we go, we don’t get there easily.
And so we find ourselves in the summer doldrums but still wait in traffic as if the season were in full swing. That all said, the good news is that you can fairly waltz into a restaurant in Tucson right now without having planned it weeks in advance, so think of this as the summer of impulsive dining decisions. I encourage you to make such an impulsive decision in the near future, as we suddenly find ourselves with lots of empty space, and I hate closing an extra lane just to make it seem busier.
We’ll be trying to create as many reasons to go out as we can this summer- there’ll be las Hogueras de San Juan in June, Bastille Day in July, and Ferragosto in August, but as we continue to find ourselves bored, we’ll continue to come up with events to amuse ourselves and you as well. In the meantime, Saturday wine tastings will continue, and there’s one this Saturday at 2:00, if you’d care to join us.
That is, assuming you can get here in this traffic. See you soon.
Love,
Doug
