Wines of the Pacific Northwest

Hello, Feastlings.

This Sunday, June 26th, our Last Sunday tasting has us tasting wines from the Pacific Northwest.  Mike Galkin leads us in a tasting that will whisk us away to a place where we can imagine drizzling rain and a thermometer that doesn’t stretch past 85 degrees.  If you’d like to join us, please call us at 326-9363, as web and email reservations won’t hold you a place.  The tasting is $30 plus tax and tip, and each wine will be paired with a tasty snack.  We’ll begin at 3:30 on Sunday, and we hope you’ll join us.

Wines of the Pacific Northwest

2014 The Eyrie Pinot Blanc, Dundee Hills                                                                                                                 $26.00

The philosophy of The Eyrie Vineyards, in the vineyards and in the winery, is to interfere as little as possible with the processes of Nature. From the beginning, our wines have been made exclusively from grapes grown without the use of insecticides, herbicides or systemic fungicides. Our vines are grown on their own roots, and are not irrigated. While we are hands-on in the vineyard, winery manipulations are restrained, to preserve the varietal flavors and expression of terroir we work so hard to achieve in the vineyards. Organic. Old vines and careful winemaking yield a complex, Alsatian style white. True Pinot Blanc, from a collection of Alsatian clones planted at Eyrie’s Three Sisters Vineyard in the Dundee Hills.  Jason Lett’s Pinot Blanc entices aromas of peach skin, pear and dried nori. The distinctly mineral fore-palate unfolds with a lush texture, clean acidity, and ripe fruit.

2013 Whoa Nelly Wines Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley                                                                                          $21.00

A wine as rich on the nose as it is spirited on the palate. This is a playful yet elegant Pinot made from a variety of Pinot Noir clones and a mix of vineyard sites in the Willamette Valley. This deliciously light, bright, tantalizing wine will knock your boots off.                                                                                                                                                                                         Aromas of dark cherry, cardamom pod, cigar box, graham, and mineral spice. The palate is lively and focused with an initial burst of pretty red fruit with lingering notes of pomegranate, sweet spice, and great acidity.

2014 Powers Winery Syrah, Columbia Valley                                                                                                          $14.00

Made from 86.5% Syrah, 10% Grenache, and 3.5% Viognier. The Viognier was co-fermented with the Syrah. Aged for 14 months in 2 and 3 year old French oak barrels. Layered aromatics of flowers, dried red fruits, and pomegranate mingle with a touch of spice and earth on the nose. The first sip of this wine explodes on the palate.  From flavors of tart cherries and raspberries, pomegranate, and a hint of cocoa alongside a slight mineral touch, this wine has an incredibly savory sensation with firm structure and acidity that leads into a finish of fine integrated silky tannins.

2013 Helioterra Wines “Heart of the Hill Vineyard” Mourvedre, Red Mountain                                           $42.00

Mourvédre is a dense, opulent grape only now starting to get its due. Though originally and traditionally used as a blending wine, Mourvédre has recently stepped into the single-varietal spotlight as an intensely perfumed and flavored gem. Our version starts savory, with aromas of Herb de Provence, sunbaked dirt, vintage wood, and black pepper. The palate is full of dusky sweets, including blackberry, gooseberry, currant, and dark chocolate, with a trace of smoke. Layered, mouth-filling tannins provide a nice structure for this powerful red.

2013 Slight of Hand “The Conjurer,” Columbia Valley                                                                                         $33.00

Launched in 2007, Sleight of Hand Cellars has but one focus, and that is to craft exceptional wines from exceptional vineyards here in the state of Washington. 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Merlot. The 2013 Conjurer was aged for 11 months in 15% new French oak.  This gorgeous blend is full-bodied and rich, with enough acidity to keep it bright and youthful, and make it a great “food wine.” The wine is brimming with fresh red fruits like cherries and pomegranate, and has a beautiful herbal note from the Cabernet Franc. The lush finish carries the fruit on forever with well-integrated, fine tannins.

2014 Revelry Riesling, Columbia Valley                                                                                                                    $16.00

Revelry winemaker Jared Burns waited until he had his feet solidly under him at Revelry before he even went looking for the grapes to make a Riesling. The infatuation with the Riesling grape at Revelry stems from an appreciation for the old world style produced in regions of Austria and Germany. In like fashion, their Riesling has incredible minerality and flavor – with a slight sweetness and yet enough acid to make it age worthy. 1.7% residual sugar.  The 2014 vintage is exceptionally crisp, with vivid pear and apple flavors.  It is an incredibly refreshing wine that will age beautifully in bottle.
