Trust Your Importer- Kobrand Wine and Spirits

Dear Feastlings,

You may recall that periodically, we try to remind you that even if you’re unfamiliar with a particular wine, you may take the plunge and buy that bottle confidently if you turn the bottle around and recognize an importer who’s garnered your trust by importing wines of high quality and good value.  This Sunday will be one of those tastings, with Scott Nowakowski of Kobrand Wine and Spirits here to show you the front labels of a broad assortment of wines, all of whom share a back label in common: they’re all Kobrand wines, and tasty ones.  The tasting is this Sunday, November 29, at 3:30 pm.  For a mere $30 plus tax and tip, you’ll taste these six delicious wines along with food pairings we’ve made to accompany them, and you’ll get a discount besides.  If you’d like to join us, please reserve a spot- we’ll probably fill up based not only on the wines but on the fact that everyone’s got family in town and is itching for a fun activity.  Call us at 326-9363 to hold a place for you, as web and email reservations won’t do the trick.  We hope you can join us.

Trust Your Importer: Kobrand Wine and Spirits

N. V. Taittinger Brut La Française, Champagne (375 ml)                                                                      $27.00

Taittinger Brut La Française is a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier wines from at least 35 villages. The high proportion of Chardonnay (40%) is unique among fine nonvintage Champagnes. The presses are located in the vineyard for immediate pressing of the fruit after the manual harvest.  This wine has a subtle, pale gold color with fine, persistent bubbles. It is delicate, with aromas of peach, white flowers, vanilla pod, and brioche on the nose and flavors of fresh fruit and honey on the palate.

2012 Domaine Zind-Humbrecht “Zind” (Chardonnay/Auxerrois,) Alsace                                       $27.00

The 2012 growing season started with a rainy, wet spring which radically transformed into a hot and dry summer. Grapes were harvested at optimal physiological ripeness and at lower potential alcohol levels. The emphasis of this vintage should definitely be on the elegant aromatics, the precision of acidity and impressive length it conveys in the wines. Terroir plays an important role in this vintage; a remarkable expression and definition can be found in the wines.  The nose shows discreet minerality, but opens up to display white fruits (peach) and subtle exotic aromas. Nice presence on the palate, quite juicy with some toasty and nutty flavors. A pleasant roundness mid-palate is complemented by fresh acidity and minerality, typical of this vineyard.

2012 Domaine Carneros Pinot Noir, Carneros                                                                                          $33.00

Mother Nature was generous in 2012 and a bountiful crop was harvested after a classic long and cool growing season for which Carneros is famous. With almost perfect sun to ripen the fruit, the crop hung on the vines until early October, thus maximizing flavor development. The 2012 edition of Estate Pinot Noir packs a full range of flavors. Beginning with the nose one encounters black raspberry, cherry, and plum along with savory notes of loamy earth, cola, and sandal wood. 10 months of barrel age lends a sweetness that balances the supple tannin from this exceptional vintage producing an intense full bodied Pinot Noir.

2012 Feudo Maccari “Saia” Sicilia IGP                                                                                                     $21.00

100% Nero d’Avola, Saia has lush, deep aromas and flavors of dark and sour red cherries, spearmint, spice and oak. Palate flavors are velvety, plush, and concentrated, balanced by fine acidity and ripe, sweet tannins, before a long finish.  A superb match for full-flavored meats and game, especially stews and roasts.

2012 Tenute del Cabreo “Il Borgo” SuperTuscan, Toscana IGT                                                       $60.00

Just above Greve in the Chianti region, the Cabreo holdings include 50 hectares planted to Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon grown to produce Cabreo Il Borgo. Chianti’s famed stony soils are ideal for making wines with great aging potential. At 300 meters in elevation, the densely planted vineyards produce low yields of grapes with concentration and complexity. Aristocratic aromas and flavors of black fruits, forest undergrowth and leather, which enhance a polished, velvety character on the palate, before firm but noble tannins.

N. V. Taylor Fladgate 10-year-old Porto, Douro Valley                                                                        $38.00

This superb example of aged tawny Porto is made from selected grapes from the best vineyards of the Cima Corgo and Douro Superior. Taylor Fladgate is an area leader in winemaking technology, as one of only three Porto producers to pioneer the development of piston fermenter techniques, called Port Toes, that extract significantly greater flavor and aroma than conventional pump-over fermentation. With an intense amber tawny color, the wine has sweet, elegant apricot flavors, delicate wood notes and rich, seductive aromas of mature fruit. Full-bodied and highly concentrated.
